For a team that had a record of 1-7 coming into this game, being down by 18 points at times in the first half and then having to travel to Los Angeles from San Diego, the lady Knights sure gave the Lady Vaqueros a run for their hard earnd victory on some agressive team defense in the second half which they almost pulled out the vicory.

I've seen it on television plenty of times where a game has less than 3 seconds left and a team being down by 1 point wins on a dramatic last basket score but never have I witnessed one.

Last night I got that chance. I know that the lady Knights won't agree with me but 2.9 seconds (to be exact) is plenty of time to go the distance of the court to score the winning basket.

Knights tough "D"

Best Sport-Nov.1.2007
After a tough fought come from behind game, the lady Knights took the lead 61-60 when Sophmore 5'4" Guard # 23 Melissa Gaines (below RT) scored on a layup with 4.3 seconds left on the clock which clearly showed in the background of that photo.

After an injury timeout was called because Vaquero, Sophomore 5'4" #3 Mackenna Karasawa was hurt on the inbound pass to that play that put the lady Knights up by 1.

Before play could resume Vaqueros Coach Monica Hang immediatly called for a full time out which allowed her star player and BS Player of the Game Mackenna to get her composure back to come in to finish off the game.

Somehow, now the clock showed 2.9 seconds remaining on the game clock instead of 4.3 seconds which I thought it should have been.(below RT).

As play resumed, the lady Vaqueros with the ball, were now down by 1 and having to go the full distance of the court in order for the score and at most a 2 point lead.

Remember the clock doesn't start until a player in the court touches the ball

So comes the inbound pass which was to midcourt, from there it was passed immediately to Vaqueros 5'10" Sophomore #22 Blanca Collazo (below LF).

Score board with 4.3 seconds

Sophmore 5'4" Guard # 23 Melissa Gaines

Who was waiting under the basket for the easy layup and the score to put the Vaqueros up 62-61 even though Knights Sophomore 5'10" #11 Nichole Stahnke was applying perfect defense with time never starting.

So the contraversy started because the clock never started which clearly shows 2.9 seconds left on the clock in the background of that photo. (below)

The ref's gathered to talk about the clock issue, which is the right way to handle this situation and came up with putting it at 1 second left.

Vaqueros 5'10" Sophomore #22 Blanca Collazo

Now the lady Knights having to go the distance of the court to win the game. Where time ran out due to the heavy pressure put on them by the Vaqueros

As we all know that 2.9 seconds on a clock is plenty of time to score the way the Vaqueros did.

But not to the lady Knights who now had an even longer ride home. Awesome, awesome game. To bad theres got to be a loser.
